Trial Units for PerAWat Project

Sanda Sound

Oceanflow were awarded a contract in December 2010 to build two small tidal turbines for the University of Edinburgh to allow them to carry out 1/10th scale tests in simulated flow (towing trials) and in real tidal flow conditions in the Strangford Narrows, Northern Ireland. The two mono-turbine units were delivered in May 2011 in order that a programme of tests could be carried out in the summer of 2011 in collaboration with Queen's University Belfast.

The units are being deployed as part of the ETI's (Energy Technology Institute) Performance Assessment of Wave and Tidal Array Systems (PerAWaT) research programme to enhance levels of confidence in the design of tidal energy conversion devices in an array configuration and therefore accelerate their large scale deployment.
